ADB will invest $100 million in STEM education

The Asian Development Bank has allocated a $100 million concessional loan to Uzbekistan to modernize natural science education in secondary schools. The project will cover 200 educational institutions across the country.

Why is this important

Investments in STEM education lay the foundation for the technological development of the economy and the training of personnel for high-tech industries. Emphasis on girls’ involvement helps reduce the gender gap in science and technology, expanding the country’s human resources potential.

What happened

  • ADB provided a $100 million concessional loan for STEM education development;
  • 200 schools will receive modern laboratories, computers, and solar panels;
  • It is planned to equip schools for students with disabilities;
  • The program includes training teachers in six STEM subjects;
  • Implementing an interdisciplinary approach using educational technologies;
  • Special focus on attracting girls to careers in science and technology.

Context

Uzbekistan is actively modernizing its education system, placing emphasis on natural sciences and technologies. The shortage of qualified personnel in IT, engineering, and high-tech industries requires systematic preparation from a school age.

Installing solar panels in schools will not only ensure energy efficiency but also introduce students to renewable energy in practice. The gender aspect of the project is important: according to global research, girls make up less than 30% of STEM students, and early engagement can change this trend.

The ADB is one of Uzbekistan’s key partners in modernizing social infrastructure. The bank has already financed projects in education, healthcare, and energy aimed at sustainable economic development.
