Uzbekistan will implement a 12-year school education system

Uzbekistan is shifting to a 12-year school education system. The reform will make it easier for graduates to gain admission to foreign universities and will remove the requirement for one-year preparatory courses abroad.

Why is this important

The reform will align the system with international standards, streamline the admission process for graduates to foreign universities, and remove the necessity of one-year preparatory courses abroad.

What happened

  • a preparatory class for children aged 6 will be included in the programme;
  • training structure: 1 year of preparation + 4 years of primary school, 5 years of basic secondary (5-9 grades), 2 years of general secondary (10-11 grades);
  • graduates will be able to directly apply for bachelor’s programs abroad;
  • annually, about 15 thousand graduates are forced to study additionally due to the discrepancy between the terms of study;
  • in 85% of countries with high PISA-2022 results, school education lasts 12 years;
  • amendments will be made to the laws “On Education” and “On Preschool Education and Upbringing”.

Context

Currently, the school system in Uzbekistan lasts 11 years. Introducing a 12-year cycle will align it more with European and Asian standards and boost the competitiveness of Uzbek graduates.
