Why is this important
This contract is one of the largest in the history of the aviation industry in Central Asia. It can strengthen Uzbekistan’s aviation infrastructure, increase international connectivity, as well as create tens of thousands of jobs in the US and strengthen partnerships with states.
What happened
- President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Boeing signed an agreement to purchase 14 Dreamliners plus an option for an additional 8 aircraft.
- The deal is valued at more than $8 billion (according to some sources — about $8.5 billion).
- According to the US, this deal will provide approximately 35,000 jobs in the United States.
- The signing of the agreement took place within the framework of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York.
Context
Uzbekistan Airways previously announced plans to modernize the fleet and expand international routes. The agreement demonstrates Uzbekistan’s active investment policy in the aviation sector and its desire to attract major foreign deals. A deal with Boeing can create a multiplier effect: infrastructure development, personnel training, logistics, service, and maintenance.
