Karimova’s $20 million assets will be directed towards modernizing rural schools

The “Ishonch” Foundation will allocate the returned assets from Gulnara Karimova's confiscated assets to a project to modernize educational infrastructure in rural areas of Uzbekistan under the WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene) program.

Why is this important

Funds seized for corruption crimes will be converted into specific investments in education and infrastructure. This not only strengthens social justice but also shows that restitution can bring tangible benefits to the population.

What will be implemented

  • Reconstruction of at least 45 rural schools: ensuring reliable water supply, sanitary facilities, heating, and energy efficiency.
  • The project will cover about 31,500 schoolchildren, mainly in remote areas.
  • Training 2,700 teachers and administrators on climate resilience, gender-sensitive WASH, and community engagement.
  • Launching the “My Best School” portal, where the public can monitor the progress of work, contractors, and expenses in real time.
  • The project will begin on October 1, 2025.

Context

The “Ishonch” Foundation was established on the basis of an agreement between Uzbekistan and Switzerland to return illegally exported assets and use them for the benefit of the people.

Currently, the fund manages $313 million in assets, of which $87 million has already been invested in social projects in education and healthcare. Earlier, it was reported that Switzerland is returning additional assets related to Karimova, amounting to approximately $182 million.
