Why is this important
The memorandum opens the way for cooperation in the scientific, technical, and regulatory aspects of the nuclear industry. For Uzbekistan, this is an opportunity to gain access to advanced technologies and experts, strengthen energy security, and diversify the energy balance.
What does the agreement provide for
- Interaction between scientists and nuclear specialists of the two countries;
- Exchange of knowledge, technologies and standards in the field of nuclear energy;
- Possible projects for research facilities and nuclear reactor infrastructure in the future;
- US support for the program to strengthen its own nuclear industry amid global energy competition.
What they say
This aligns with President Trump’s decree aimed at helping the US nuclear industry become competitive in the global market, — said Brent Christensen.
Context
In the spring of 2025, Donald Trump signed a package of documents aimed at strengthening the American nuclear industry: the construction of reactors, and the expansion of uranium enrichment.
The US is actively promoting the export of nuclear technologies as part of energy diplomacy. Uzbekistan has not previously had major international partners in the nuclear field – this memorandum could become a starting point for developing relevant competencies within the country.
