Why is this important
The project transforms the city’s infrastructure and leisure activities, creating a niche for business and tourism. The night-time economy could become a new driver of employment and attract tourists, while also enhancing the quality of the urban environment.
What happened
It is planned to create 320 round-the-clock streets and zones by 2030;
They will house 8,000 cafes and restaurants and 14,200 retail and service outlets.
more than 11 thousand new jobs and up to 190 thousand tourists are expected annually;
streets will operate 24/7 on weekends or daily from 9:00 to 3:00;
speed limits (20 km/h), parking lots, and night bus routes will be introduced;
each zone will be assigned to the management company on a competitive basis;
Control: “Safe City” video surveillance, patrols of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the National Guard.
Context
The project was developed based on the experience of the CIS, EU, and Asia. Uzbekistan expects to support small businesses, reduce unemployment, and increase tourist flow through the night economy. In the world’s major cities (Berlin, Seoul, London), night zones have become a separate segment of the economy with multimillion-dollar turnover.
