A combined NPP with a capacity of 2.1 GW will be built in the Jizzakh region

Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khojayev announced plans to establish a nuclear power plant in Jizzakh region, including two large reactors and two low-power reactors.

Why is this important

The project connects basic generation and maneuverable sources, which will strengthen the country’s energy stability. This is also a key step towards developing Uzbekistan’s nuclear industry and technological autonomy.

What is known

  • The initiative is being implemented jointly with Rosatom, and the parties are already discussing the technical details.
  • Uzatom announced that the republic will be a pioneer in integrating small modular reactors with large units.
  • The large nuclear power plant project was discussed earlier: two VVER-1000 power units with the option to expand to four.
  • Earlier, the Ministry of Energy stated that it would first build small units, then large reactors.

Context

The statement comes amid the global trend of developing nuclear and “clean” energy. Uzbekistan has previously expressed plans to increase the share of renewable sources to 40% by 2030; atomic energy is considered as a supplement to renewable energy sources. The presence and experience of both small and large nuclear power plants will create long-term competencies and infrastructure for the sector.
