Why is this important
The goal of Uzbekistan’s authorities is to reduce poverty to 6% by the end of 2025, and to eradicate absolute poverty in the future. This is a significant and ambitious task. Support from major international institutions such as the ADB strengthens trust in programs and projects aimed at social development, infrastructure, and support for the population.
What happened
- At the “From Poverty to Prosperity” forum, Asian Development Bank (ADB) Vice President Inmin Yan stated that Uzbekistan’s experience in poverty reduction can serve as an example for Central Asian countries.
- According to Inmin Yan, the key role in achieving tangible results lies in the participation of the private sector and the application of a three-tier approach to business development.
Context
Uzbekistan is implementing social programs, including creating a social registry of those in need, investing in the development of mahallas, building infrastructure, and supporting entrepreneurship. The ADB recently approved a new cooperation strategy with Uzbekistan for 2024-2028, which prioritizes inclusive and green development, human capital development, and private sector participation.
