Why is this important
If the project is implemented, it can add critical infrastructure: data centers are a database for cloud services, applications, AI, and data storage. Attracting an international investor with experience in sustainable “green” data centers can help Uzbekistan improve energy efficiency and environmental standards.
The creation of such a center can accelerate digital transformation, reduce delays and costs for businesses that require high requirements for computing power, privacy, and reliability. This could strengthen Uzbekistan’s position as an attractive platform for international companies in FinTech, Big Data, AI, and cloud solutions.
What happened
- Malaysian company Basis Bay is developing the possibility of building a data center in Uzbekistan as part of the digital economy development policy;
- The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Basis Bay Prabo Tiagaraja held negotiations with Uzbekistan (through the ambassador) on investment and construction issues;
- In the near future, company specialists will visit Uzbekistan to study the IT services market and assess the practical feasibility of implementing the project;
- Basis Bay already has experience: a “green” data center operates in Malaysia, fully owned by a local resident;
- Uzbekistan and Malaysia are already strengthening cooperation in the digital sphere. In February 2025, the parties agreed on a Memorandum of Cooperation aimed at developing the digital economy, IT services, innovation, and the export of IT solutions.
Context
Basis Bay is a supplier of sustainable cloud and data services, operating in more than 20 countries, with the underlying meaning of green technologies. Their existing data center in Cyberjaya (Malaysia) is a four-story building with an office part, located in a technology cluster, designed to meet international standards and green practices.
Cooperation between Uzbekistan and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has already established some framework to support Malaysian companies’ entry into the Uzbek digital services market.
