Why is this important
The complete transition to online sales on the day of launch is a radical step in the fight against “grey” schemes and speculation. The closure of dealerships excludes intermediaries who inflate prices or sell contracts with a markup. A warning about fake contracts without a QR code indicates the scale of the shadow contract market. This is part of UzAuto Motors’ sales transparency and deficit management strategy.

Combating counterfeiting
UzAuto Motors reminded that the original contract has a QR code. Contracts without a QR code are not considered official and have no relation to the company or its dealers.
This warning is related to the spread of “grey” schemes, where intermediaries sell fake or unofficial contracts with a markup.
Context
Car shortage: Uzbekistan is facing a chronic shortage of popular models (Cobalt, Tracker, Onix), creating a “grey” contract market. Dealers and intermediaries sell contracts with a markup of 10-20% of the official price, turning the purchase of a car into a lottery.
Online sales: UzAuto Motors introduced online contracting in 2024 to combat speculation and increase transparency. Clients register on the platform, fill out an application, pay an advance payment, and receive a contract with a QR code.
Closing of dealerships: The complete closure of dealerships on the day of sales is an unprecedented step. This eliminates the possibility of “grey” schemes, when dealers reserve cars for resale or take bribes for “quick” delivery.
Exhibition specimens: the presence of exhibition machines in dealerships allows customers to familiarize themselves with new configurations in advance, test the interior, and ask questions to managers. However, you can only make a purchase online.
QR code in the contract: introduction of a QR code — protection against counterfeiting. Clients can scan the code and verify the authenticity of the contract on the UzAuto Motors website. This eliminates the risk of purchasing a fake contract from fraudsters.
Two new configurations: UzAuto Motors did not disclose the details of the new versions of Cobalt. This could be improved configurations with additional options (multimedia, rearview camera, parktronics, climate control) or a sports version.
Prices: Cobalt’s official price is around 180-220 million soums depending on the configuration. On the “grey” market, contracts are sold with a markup of 20-30 million soums.
Analogous online sales practices exist in other countries (Tesla, Polestar), where car purchases are fully digitized. However, closing dealerships on the launch day is a unique solution to combat speculation.
Risks: The online system may experience technical failures due to an influx of users at 10:00 AM. If a website or app “falls”, it will cause customer dissatisfaction and give an advantage to speculators.
