Why is this important
For Uzbekistan, this is an opportunity to attract advanced technologies, accelerate the modernization of the energy sector, and strengthen the role of private capital. For Mitsubishi — access to a developing market in a region with growing energy demand.
What happened
- Meeting of Deputy Minister Ilzat Kasimov and Mitsubishi CEO Dzyuro Baba: Ways to accelerate current energy projects and plans for new initiatives based on PPP were discussed.
- The Japanese side expressed its readiness to increase investment and participation in Uzbekistan’s infrastructure projects.
- Mitsubishi already cooperates with Uzbekistan through Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI): in May 2025, a memorandum was signed on joint study of decarbonization strategies — including the modernization of gas turbines and the introduction of joint hydrogen combustion technology.
- As part of the current cooperation, Mitsubishi Power has been supplying gas turbines for the Sirdaryo Gas Turbine Station (GTCC) project in Uzbekistan.
Context
Uzbekistan is actively promoting a policy of diversification and sustainable energy, including the development of renewable sources and reducing the carbon footprint. The project to modernize turbines with hydrogen mixtures and improve generation efficiency is part of the roadmap for the transition to “clean” energy.
Successfully implemented projects and foreign investments can stimulate further inflow of technological investments and improve Uzbekistan’s reputation as a reliable partner.
