Why is this important
The signing of new protocols brings the country closer to full membership in the WTO, which can strengthen Uzbekistan’s position in global trade. The new agreements are opening up markets for the export of Uzbek goods and services, contributing to the diversification of trade.
The completion of negotiations with the remaining countries creates a more transparent legal environment for businesses and investors.
What happened
- Market access protocols have been signed with Argentina, Australia, and Honduras.
- According to Azizbek Urunov, negotiations with these countries have been completed, and the total number of countries with which there are final agreements reaches 29.
- In addition, fundamental agreements have been reached with two other WTO member countries.
- There are still three countries with which negotiations and agreements have not yet been completed.
What they say
With each signing, we are approaching full membership in the WTO — an important stage that will open new opportunities for our economy, region, and global trade partners, — Urunov wrote.
Context
Uzbekistan resumed the WTO accession process in 2020, after a period of pause, and has been actively conducting bilateral negotiations with many members of the organization since then. The goal is to complete the process for the WTO ministerial conference in Cameroon, scheduled for March 2026.
Market access protocols are key elements for joining, as they define the conditions under which Uzbek companies’ goods and services will compete in open markets.
