This strengthens importers&#8217; purchasing power and can slow down inflation. <\/p>\n<p><strong>What happened<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On September 16, the dollar depreciated by <strong>59.45 soums<\/strong> to <strong>12,285.16 soums<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>This is at least since <strong>December 5, 2023<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>Since the beginning of the year, the soum has strengthened against the dollar by <strong>438 soums<\/strong> or <strong>3.4%<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>In August, the exchange rate increased by <strong>109.32 soums<\/strong> \u2014 the highest since the end of 2023;<\/li>\n<li>In commercial banks, the selling rate is <strong>12,350-12,405 soums<\/strong>, and the purchase rate is between <strong>12,225<\/strong> and <strong>12,290<\/strong> soums.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Experts link the strengthening of the sum to a number of factors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The decrease in confidence in the dollar due to Trump&#8217;s policies,<\/li>\n<li>increase in gold prices,<\/li>\n<li>increase in foreign exchange earnings,<\/li>\n<li>limited domestic demand for foreign currency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The IMF previously recommended that Uzbekistan allow more flexibility of the exchange rate \u2014 the authorities supported this advice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since the spring of 2024, the Central Bank has expanded the corridor for currency fluctuations, which has strengthened the market mechanism for setting the exchange rate.
