Why is this important
The project promises to strengthen energy and logistics cooperation between the two countries, open a transit route to the sea for Uzbekistan, and stimulate regional integration.
What happened
- The work began on September 14 at the Tuti-Maidan gas field under the management of Eriell KAM for 25 years.
- The licenses cover the geological exploration and production of hydrocarbons in the territory of Afghanistan.
- According to Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamahmudov, the project’s future successes could stimulate the expansion of work in other areas.
- Stability and infrastructure in Afghanistan are expected to become the key to Uzbekistan’s route to world seas.
- The Ministry of Energy emphasizes that peace in Afghanistan is a strategic task for the region.
What they say
This is only the first stage. Depending on the results, we will expand cooperation to other areas as well, — Mirzamahmudov noted.
Context
Earlier, it was reported that energy projects worth ~$250 million, including power lines, were being implemented between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. This is one of Tashkent’s first significant steps in the hydrocarbon sector outside its territory. The success of the project depends on political stability, security in the region, and investment support.
