UzAuto Motors is losing customers from the premium segment amid growing competitors

Sales of UzAuto's expensive models fell by an average of 43%. At the same time, Kia, BYD, Haval, and other brands are showing impressive growth, especially in the price segment above $20,000.

Why is this important

Losing some wealthy customers means moving down the market — UzAuto may remain in the niche of budget and mass models. And competitors focused on premium and electro/hybrid models capture a promising audience.

What happened

  • Sales of the six most expensive UzAuto models decreased by approximately 43% over the year.
  • Traverse — 21% drop
  • Equinox — “disappeared from the market” (minus 94%)
  • Captiva and Tahoe — remain, but sell poorly (minutes 71% and minus 67%)
  • Tracker — good volumes (28 thousand), but a 12% decrease
  • The only model with Malibu growth: sales growth of 5.3%
  • At the same time, Kia Sonet, BYD Chazor, Chery Arrizo 6 Pro, BYD Song Plus, and BYD Song Pro models increased sales by an average of 86%.
  • Especially noticeably increased Haval M6: in 9 months — from 974 to 3,204 units (an increase of 229%).
  • In the mass segment, UzAuto is still strong: the Cobalt model remains the best-selling in the country.
  • The Khorezm plant, which produces Damas and Labo, is increasing its market share: from 26% to 35% per year.
  • The Andijan plant (Cobalt assembly) is stable, although Onix sales have fallen by 38%.
  • General picture: UzAuto maintains dominance in the budget segment, but loses customers with higher budgets.

What the facts say

In the first quarter of 2025, UzAuto’s net profit decreased more than twofold, and the company’s market share fell from 90.2% to 82.2%. Competitors are increasing their shares: BYD in Uzbekistan is strengthening its presence through local production. In the first nine months of 2025, a total of 296,331 vehicles were sold, and UzAuto Motors’ share exceeded 80%.

Context

UzAuto is the traditional leader of the Uzbek car market, whose Chevrolet models remain popular and affordable. But global trends — interest in electric vehicles, hybrids, and international brands — are changing consumer preferences.

BYD has already launched assembly in Uzbekistan (plant in Jizzakh region). Kia and other Asian brands are strengthening their position through aggressive expansion and marketing. If UzAuto doesn’t adapt (new models, premium lineups, electrification), its market share in the medium-high segment may decrease even faster.
