Why is this important
Starting in 2026, environmental zones will operate in Tashkent, restricting entry for “dirty” cars. Eco-stickers will become a key control tool: their color will determine whether the car will be able to drive into certain areas of the city.
What happened
- The Government approved the procedure for assigning environmental categories to motor vehicles and issuing special eco-stickers.
- The environmental category is determined by the vehicle’s environmental class.
- Depending on the category, the owner will receive a sticker of one of three colors: green, yellow, red.
- Vehicles will be divided by fuel type and compliance with “Euro” standards.
Numbers and facts
- The clean category is the green sticker: it will include electric and hybrid cars, cars under 3 years old, gasoline and gas cars of the “Euro-2” and higher standard, diesel cars of the “Euro-4” and higher standard.
- Middle category — yellow sticker: “Euro-0” and “Euro-1” gasoline and gas vehicles, “Euro-3” diesel vehicles.
- Harmful category — red sticker: diesel cars of the “Euro-0”, “Euro-1” and “Euro-2” standards.
“Euro” standard and stickers
- The environmental standard can be found by: technical passport data, online verification via VIN code, factory label under the hood, manufacturer’s information.
- For diesel models, the environmental standard is generally one step lower.
- Eco-stickers will be issued: in the Road Safety Service units when registering or re-registering a vehicle or voluntarily through the Ministry of Internal Affairs website or my.gov.uz portal.
- Upon compliance with the requirements, the owner is issued an indefinite-release eco-sticker.
System
- The introduction of the “Environmental Transport” system, aimed at reducing harmful emissions, is planned from January 1, 2026.
- Eco-stickers will allow: determining the environmental class of the car, introducing restrictions on traffic depending on the level of harmful emissions.
- Special information signs will be installed at the boundaries of the zones, and information about the zones will be posted on online platforms.
Context
- Vehicle owners with yellow and red stickers may face restrictions on entering certain districts of Tashkent in the future.
- Owners of “clean” cars will have an advantage when driving around the city.
- The system effectively lays the foundation for the gradual displacement of the most polluting transport from the center of the capital.
