Why is this important
Transport congestion and traffic jams in Tashkent directly affect the quality of life, economic activity, ecology, and the speed of emergency services. The introduction of an intelligent traffic management system should radically increase the efficiency of urban transport infrastructure. The number of traffic jams and accidents on key highways is expected to decrease. Transport management in Tashkent will transition to a digital and centralized model.
What happened
- Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed a presentation on improving transport management and preventing traffic jams in Tashkent.
- The specialists summarized the changes that have taken place in the sphere in recent years.
- Along with positive changes, the predominance of private transport over public transport was noted, which affects traffic congestion and the number of traffic jams.
- As a solution, it was proposed to implement an intelligent transport system (ITS) and create a unified center for traffic management in Tashkent.
Numbers and facts
In recent years:
- the capital’s bus fleet has doubled and reached almost 1900 units;
- The movement interval has been reduced from 30 to 15 minutes;
- daily bus transportation reached 1.4 million passengers.
- the length of metro lines has increased to 70.5 km, the number of stations – from 29 to 50.
- the metro serves about 900 thousand passengers daily.
Within the framework of organizing road traffic:
- 2870 road signs were replaced;
- 2770 new signs and 55 traffic lights were installed.
New system
Center functions:
- analysis and modeling of transport and pedestrian flows;
- implementation and management of ITS;
- development and implementation of a transport master plan;
- organization of city parking lots;
- development of infrastructure for charging electric vehicles;
- stimulation of means of individual mobility.
The ITS platform, including using artificial intelligence, will analyze data from cameras, sensors, and GPS, predict traffic jams, optimize routes, adapt traffic lights, and automatically call emergency services for accidents.
Context
- Intelligent transport systems are widely used in the world’s major megacities as the main tool for traffic management.
- The number of traffic jams and accidents on key highways is expected to decrease.
- Transport management in Tashkent will transition to a digital and centralized model.
- In the long term, this will improve the environmental situation in the city.
