KDHC will introduce bioenergy and upgrade heat supply — precisely where and why

South Korea's District Heating Corporation (KDHC) and the Ministry of Investments, Industry and Trade of Uzbekistan have agreed on projects in three regions.

Why is this important

The projects will enhance the energy efficiency and environmental sustainability of heating systems in areas where infrastructure requires upgrading. This exemplifies PPP (public-private partnership) cooperation between Uzbekistan and South Korea, which could attract further foreign investors to the energy sector. The modernisation of heat networks and the development of bioenergy align with global trends in reducing carbon footprints and utilising renewable energy sources.

What happened

  • On 12 September, Minister Laziz Kudratov met with the KDHC delegation led by Chon Yong-gi.

Three priority areas of cooperation were discussed:

  1. Bioenergy complex in Jizzakh region.
  2. Modernisation of Zarafshon’s heat supply system.
  3. Implementation of modern heating solutions as part of the “New Tashkent” project.

The agreements include the development of financing models and PPP mechanisms. KDHC is also establishing an expert group to offer advice on infrastructure and personnel training.

Context

KDHC is a South Korean state-owned company operating in the fields of central heating, cogeneration, and renewable energy sources. In Uzbekistan, there is already a task to modernise heat supply: renewing heat networks and increasing energy efficiency—these are all parts of national plans. Projects of this scope require substantial investments and time to prepare, especially infrastructure projects related to heat and energy.
