Why is this important
The project will provide sustainable transport links, grant access for residents (3.8 million people) to markets, medical facilities, and schools, and enhance climate resilience and road safety.
What happened
- The reconstruction will cover 16 sections (188 km) in 9 districts of Khorezm and 23 sections (328.1 km) in 14 districts of Karakalpakstan.
- A phased financing approach: the initial tranche — $71.1 million, with subsequent work in Karakalpakstan.
- The integration of climate-resilient solutions and digital monitoring tools is envisaged.
Context
The project supports the government’s strategy for regional growth and climate resilience. The AIIB has already been collaborating with Uzbekistan on transport and energy infrastructure.
